This week, discover Perfect Moods: a lounge webradio for chill, atmospheric music!

Can you briefly describe your project and the origins of Perfect Moods?

Perfect Moods started as my own private project. I’ve been collecting music for years and I have a particular love for atmospheric chill/lounge music. I own a fashion store with my wife (www.perfectlybasics.com) that we also use to promote Perfect Moods. As fashion buyers, we visit a lot of showrooms in Europe and I always get so annoyed about the bad quality of music surrounding us! I started to work with RadioKing and added my station to platforms like Sonos radio and Tunein

How did you hear about RadioKing?

I found RadioKing by searching on Google a few years ago.

What are the different ways to listen to Perfect Moods?

You can listen to Perfect Moods via our mobile application (iOS & Android), our Perfect Moods website and on various online directories.

perfect moods

In your opinion, what are the essential features that RadioKing offers to a radio station?

First of all, easy management! Also the fact that you can purchase a website, mobile app and radio station from the same provider. Plus, uploading to the Radio Manager is incredibly easy too!

What’s your target audience?

Everybody with a love for chill music! However, since it’s linked to Perfectly Basics, our target audience is generally women that are 32+ years old. I’m often surprised to see that people listen to Perfect Moods for long periods of time throughout the day! It’s the perfect background music that attracts over 30K listeners every month, with an average listening time of more than 2 hours.

What do you enjoy the most about this project?

Next to my fashion-busy e-commerce life I have time to enjoy, collect and program/mix music. In our 2000m2 office and photo studio I control the playlists, and always find new music on traxsource.com. The best lounge music was made between 1998 – 2005 so I have digitalized a lot of CD’s from that time.

What’s next for Perfect Moods radio?

We don’t have a commercial goal with Perfect Moods, we just use it to spread the word “PERFECT” in the homes of our listeners via our jingles. Other than that, our stream is ad-free. I just hope to continue to enjoy making radio for many more years to come! I love checking the statistics tab in the Radio Manager to see where my listeners are located. I often see that they are in a lot of tropical places I would love to visit!

To finish off, a word of advice for those who want to start their radio adventure?

Getting started is super easy and after that you’re the King! My advice would be to stay focused on your music, chose a style and give your listeners what they expect. Also, don’t forget to check your local music licensing requirements – Music is NOT free.

This week, discover Lebonmix (“the good mix” in English), an online radio station that broadcasts carefully selected music for its listeners!

We’re leaving you in the hands of Pierre, the man behind Lebonmix, to find out more about his radio.

Can you describe your project and the origins of Lebonmix Radio in a few words?

My goal is to get you to discover a lot of tracks, which I have rigorously selected. I have listened to them all one by one and classified them. I feel that the rhythms need to be adapted depending on the time of day. We broadcast a mix of soft house, acid jazz, trip hop, groove, electro, funk basis, never too much club or dance, always in the right tempo.  I make all the jingles and radio identification myself in the studio.

I offer 3 ways of listening to Lebonmix: Soft, Medium or Dynamic version. Three states of mind, leaving place to music with a minimum of jingles and no spoken intervention, always accompanied with a high quality sound.

Nowadays, modern techniques are available and the legislation of recent years allows the creation of online radio stations. Lebonmix Radio has its own radio studio in Toulouse. I broadcast at home and it’s great! I broke open my piggy bank to buy some equipment and I can now broadcast worldwide from my 9m2 studio!

I have chosen to offer HD sound quality, each title is given “special” sound processing and “home-made” calibration.

Did you have any experience in the world of radio before?

Yes! When I was 15 years old, I got my first mixing desk for Christmas and I used to DJ at parties on Wednesday afternoons! When I was 20, I had my first FM radio experience at RDM in Cahors and since then, I’ve always kept this desire for broadcasting.

How did you discover RadioKing?

By typing “create online radio” on Google. There are a number of offers, but RadioKing is by far the platform that has found a great communication tone. Plus the presentation of their services is well done.

What are the different ways to listen to your Radio Station?

You can listen to Lebonmix via the players on our website, but also via the mobile application on the AppStore or GooglePlay. Finally, you will also find the radio on various online directories.

Can you tell us about your audience profile?

It’s important to define a target audience. I chose a target that I could identify with, the 45/55 year olds, because I am the first listener! Secondly, the target should not be too large in order to better meet the expectations of its listeners. In this age group, we like new things, but it’s easy to please with an old title from time to time without sounding too old-fashioned either. My listeners accept eclecticism and a mix of styles, which makes Lebonmix!

What do you enjoy most about this project?

I love being able to run a radio station by myself. What I like the most is discovering new album releases. Sharing my music selection and feeling that listeners appreciate it is what motivates me the most in managing a radio station from A to Z! Giving a soul to my radio to make the difference with the more austere streaming platforms.

How do you choose the artists that are broadcast on your radio?

I work mainly with Qobuz, from whom I buy all the tracks. Every week, I go through the new releases one by one and I buy the albums, to extract the best from them. I also sometimes go on BandCamp and buy some albums from unknown artists. Then I get a lot of solicitations from artists who send me their songs. I listen and if I like it, I add it to the playlist!

Do you have an anecdote to share about the creation of your project?

It may not be an anecdote, but the fact that it comes up almost every day makes me want tell you! So many people ask me the same question via e-mail or social networks: “what is the frequency of your radio in such and such a city? ». I always answer by explaining that I’m an online radio station and how people can tune in.

I find that a lot of people still associate FM with radio (or the opposite). People generally assume that listening digitally is complicated (when it reality, it’s super simple!)

What’s next for Pure Vintage Radio?

At the beginning of July, I opened a new stream: Jim’s Prophecy. Why this name? Because Jim Morrison had announced in 1968 that nowadays there would be only one person on stage surrounded by machines! Jim’s Prophecy is a radio reserved for electronic music for the initiated, with the particularity of playing only 100% vinyl. I set up this project with a friend of mine who sells records in a bus parked at the media library in Toulouse. I manage the radio part, Electronic Music Vinyl Radio, the radio only plays the vinyls that are available on the bus!

This gives this new radio station a point of contact and exchange with its listeners. Of course, I entrusted this project to RadioKing and I am taking advantage of my technical experience gained with other radio stations to launch this new stream more easily, without asking myself too many questions.

To finish off, a word of advice for those who want to start their radio adventure?

It’s super interesting to launch this type of project. I have a lot of messages from people who want advice, it’s sometimes complicated to answer them at a distance and I lack time. Some people think it’s all about equipment… but with RadioKing you can easily manage an online radio without having any!

What matters is how much I’m willing to spend each month on marketing to get the word out about my radio. Without marketing, the radio will not be listened to, even if a lot of effort is put into the playlists.

I find that it’s necessary to invest heavily at the beginning and create a community on social networks, which allows you to keep in touch with your listeners. You have to pay for publications to be delivered and do targeted promotion on the networks. This is by far the most important cost.

Today, discover Pure Vintage Radio. A radio station that will take you back in time, thanks to its 50/60s oriented programming!

Can you describe your project and the origins of Pure Vintage Radio in a few words?

In 2013, our associative team launched the press magazines Pure Vintage and Pure Pin Up, dedicated to the French-speaking vintage community and the pin-up universe. Music plays a major part in this universe, you could say that it makes the heart of this community beat! So, quite naturally, we decided that we wanted to go further in our approach by launching an online radio station. Our magazines are a success and the radio station is on its way to becoming one after 6 years of work.

As we are volunteers, everything is done on our own time, and therefore, things tend to take longer to set up. We devoted this time to ensure a musical playlist of the highest quality, as we are dealing with purists. For us, it’s out of the question to offer our listeners just any track sung by just anyone. Everything has to be carefully considered before going on air.

We also encourage listeners to use the Like/ Dislike feature of the radio player so that we can remove songs from our playlist when they don’t like them. Over the years, we have also gradually invested in broadcasting and reporting equipment to finally take it to the next level and provide live broadcasts in the studio and on location.

Did you have any experience in the world of radio before?

Fabrice Berreur, the founder of the magazine, was a “pioneer” of Pirate radios in France in the 80s. As he is a radio host and technician, he set up several FM radios at the time, which greatly helped the project.

How did you discover RadioKing?

For the first few months, Pure Vintage Radio was on another “free” (now extinct) platform. We encountered a lot of issues on a daily basis, so we searched for another solution that could free our minds from the technical aspect and allow us to devote ourselves to the content and the development of our project. We quickly joined RadioKing for its technical reliability which has continued to progress ever since.

What are the different ways to listen to your Radio Station?

Our website and the RadioKing platform. The mobile application is an important investment so it will come in due course.

Can you tell us about your audience profile?

The vintage community is large, ranging from teenagers to 60-year-olds, from purists to amateurs, but all of them embrace these musical styles, it’s their lifestyle. Pure Vintage Radio is also used to providing soundtracks for dances and festivals.

We also broadcast continuously in several specialty shops, bars and restaurants. A large French brand of American diners uses Pure Vintage Radio for the sound atmosphere of its restaurants.

What do you enjoy most about this project?

The positive feedback from our listeners!

How do you choose the artists that are broadcast on your radio?

Our playlist is rock’n’roll, rockabilly, 50’s/60’s hits, so there are the great classics that can’t be ignored. We also include a lot of big international names and of course all the current French-speaking artists playing these styles, which we put in the spotlight as much as possible.

What’s next for Pure Vintage Radio?

More and more live broadcasts, animated podcasts and news reports! As the radio world has evolved, we would also like to include live video streaming.

To finish off, a word of advice for those who want to start their radio adventure?

If you take the time to do things professionally and thoroughly, and if your radio station stands out from the crowd or addresses a community niche, then you have every chance of succeeding!

Today we’re taking you on a voyage thanks to Stéphane from Allô la Planète (Hello Planet in English), a legendary show by France Inter that now has its own online radio station.

Can you describe your project and the origins of Allô la Planète in a few words?

Allô la Planète is a radio station specialising in travel. You can essentially listen to world music, but not only. ALP also includes programs and podcasts based on the theme of travel. Meetings, interviews… just like the popular show with the same name which was broadcast a few years ago on France Inter, Allô la Planète is a showcase of travellers who talk about their adventures.

What is the profile of your listeners?

Travellers, pilgrims, hikers, backpackers, but also people who want to escape by listening to the Allô la Planète program.

What do you like the most about this project?

I am a journalist in the written press. I am discovering the world of radio, which I find incredibly interesting and very exciting. It is also exciting to launch this type of project.

What’s next for Allô la Planète?

The development of our radio requires a successful participatory financing. We hope to multiply the number of travel fairs and festivals to make ourselves known and perhaps broadcast on the airwaves.

Finally, a word of advice for those who wish to embark on the radio adventure?

If you want to create your own radio, go for it!!! RadioKing makes it possible by providing simple and effective tools.

You can listen to Allô la Planète on their website, and be sure to follow them on Facebook & Twitter.

This week, we’re introducing you to Yachting International Radio, bringing you a taste of home across the waves!

Tell us about the origins of Yachting International Radio

Yachting International Radio was born as a result of a desire to give a voice to the worldwide crew in the Yachting Industry. From small yachts with only one or two crew, to the large super-yachts with crews into the double digits. From the little things that impact daily life, to the larger issues of employment and environment. We aim to deliver great music, first and foremost, as well as gradually adding content that highlights the issues in and around the world today!

In your opinion, what are the essential features that RadioKing offers to a radio station?

RadioKing was the choice of platform after having tried out numerous options and finding that nothing else seemed to work. As a former Radio Host and Presenter, I had always been behind the microphone but never dealt with the tech side of things. Most of the other platforms that I looked at just proved to be too difficult. For us here at Yachting International Radio, the main concern was the ability to seamlessly go live and have a system that made it very simple enabling the host to concentrate on the hosting as opposed to the tech. RadioKing offered that ability!

What do you enjoy the most about this project?

This project brings me into contact with some of the most fascinating people from all walks of life, from every corner of the globe. I can be having a conversation with someone in Australia and five minutes later, chatting to someone in France. I love connecting with people and hopefully, bringing great music into their lives.

yachting international radio

Can you tell us about your audience profile?

The audience that we are targeting is obviously Yacht Crew. Generally speaking, however, this translates into a 24 to 54 age demographic. Including the pop and rock hits of today, both Billboard for US crew and the UK and European hits. We also have the Classic Rock Genre, 90’s, Chill Out Zone, and Sunday R&B. One thing that we are very aware of here at Yachting International Radio is that, Radio is about entertainment, making you feel good, and always making sure that you are meeting the listener’s needs. In that vein, we make sure that the music is always up to date, and regardless of what line of work you are in, you can and will find the music that you are wanting to hear, throughout the day, without too much chatter.

What’s next for Yachting International Radio?

In two months, Yachting International Radio will be leaving our Canadian base and heading to Spain. We will be continuing on with exactly what we have started and hopefully bringing you even better music and more content, as well as some great Facebook live segments to augment the online radio platform.

To finish off, a word of advice for those who want to start their radio adventure?

Regardless of how easy RadioKing is, the whole concept of setting up a radio station, creating a library, finding the right music balance, the right amount of talk and, affordable jingles, none of this is a walk in the park. You must be willing to change schedules, change formats, and if you are planning on making a living through it? Working constantly with social media in order to let people know where you are, and what you are about, as well as boosting listening numbers. You won’t be able to sell advertising unless you have a stable listening audience. It is not easy, it doesn’t happen overnight, and you need to be prepared to always watch for trends in music, changing listening habits, things that people tune in for, and out because of.

The journey is exciting, fantastic, scary, heartbreaking, and every other emotion in between, but, rewarding as well.

Like everything in life, you must be prepared for the days when you wonder what you are doing and why you are spending every waking moment working but not seeing any rewards. The rewards come, but always remember that tomorrow is a new day and you need to make sure that you are changing with the trends and reaching out to more and more listeners.

This week, we are delighted to welcome Jérome, founder of Radio Cyclo, the first online radio station dedicated to cycling. Hold on tight, we’re taking you on a ride to the universe of this radio station, dedicated to 2-wheel enthusiasts.

Can you briefly describe your project and the origins of Radio Cyclo?

Radio Cyclo is first and foremost the encounter of two radio enthusiasts and sports lovers (especially cycling). I had already been involved with the radio in 1982, during the liberation of the airwaves as we say, and I recently returned to it through an online radio station entirely dedicated to real estate. Arnaud Manzanini, co-creator, produces and distributes his podcasts, he is a high-level cyclist, but also a race organiser. Our 2 experiences gave birth to Radio Cyclo.

What can we listen to on Radio Cyclo?

Radio Cyclo, is a mix of music, interviews, reviews, and live coverage of cycling events.

What’s your target audience?

Our main aim is to talk about cycling for all. Our listeners are mostly cyclists, bicycle workers…

What do you enjoy most about this project?

We have a lot of fun hosting radio shows during events, in direct contact with our listeners. We also appreciate all this entrepreneurship and project implementation.

What’s next for Radio Cyclo?

What’s next? Our beginnings are very satisfying and we intend to move forward with Radio Cyclo. When all this is well structured and in place, why not launch other projects with other themes. We will think about it when the time comes!

To finish off, a word of advice for those who want to start their radio adventure?

Feel free to start and create your own online radio station. It is the modern medium. RadioKing allows you to embark on the adventure, with the necessary tools and with a reasonable budget.

Can you briefly describe your project and the origins of E3 Radio?

E3 Radio is an online radio network curated from a queer point of view. We celebrate black, brown & queer music by not only providing a platform to be heard on, but also by playing the music in higher rotation. E3 was born out of a need for more visibility.

How did you hear about RadioKing?

I’d been searching for a platform where we could broadcast 24/7 and be heard all the time. We also needed a platform that provided us with the ability to curate, brand, and control what gets played. RadioKing was a great fit!

In your opinion, what are the essential features that RadioKing offers to a radio station?

We really value the ability to use tags in our playlists. The many features of the Radio Manager are extremely robust and really give us a lot of control over our programming.

What’s your target audience?

Our primary target audience is black, brown & queer folks who enjoy good music. In addition, we target people who want to hear something different than your traditional FM/AM stations.

What do you enjoy the most about this project?

Giving artists a platform to be heard on!

What’s next for E3 Radio?

A radio mobile app…That’s all I can say for now but we are really excited about it!

Can you describe your project and the idea behind Exile FM in a couple of words?

Open-minded, eclectic, and inclusive: radio as it should be!

Prior to this, did you have any experience in the radio world?

Our three founding members had previous online radio broadcasting experience. The experience of our other presenters ranges from extensive (including the BBC and college, commercial and community radio) to none at all. What we do all share is a love of music, and a sense of adventure.

How did you hear about RadioKing?

In your opinion, what are the essential features that RadioKing offers to a radio station?

We chose RadioKing because of its competitive prices, the range and flexibility of the different packages it offers, and the ability to broadcast live. We were impressed with the bandwidth and streaming quality, and liked the fact that RK was looking to become more established in the UK. The website that we’ve created using RK’s template means that we can express our individuality as a station, while still connecting up to RK and streamlining our management functions with relative ease.

What are the different ways to listen to Exile FM?

We encourage listeners to access ExileFM through our website, exilefm.com. They can, of course, listen through the RadioKing website too, and our ExileFM Facebook page has a radio player function.  Most of our shows are broadcast live, but we’re really pleased to report that all our shows are now uploaded to our website as “podcasts”, so listeners can access them at their leisure after the live broadcast.

Can you tell us about your audience profile?

Our audience is relatively small, but far-flung, diverse, and growing. Most of our current presenters are located in the UK, but we also have a presenter based in Melbourne, Australia, and one in Denver, Colorado; and our listenership reflects our international and well-traveled team.

Most listeners have heard of the station through word of mouth. Some of them are drawn in by specialist shows, such as Wil Walker’s folk-themed Take On Tradition and Marc Golding’s jazz/blues show Birth of the Cool. Others appreciate the varied music provided by the more eclectic offerings, such as Zero’s 7” single show Surface Noise, Whispering DG, and Martin Haskell’s popular Sunday Brunch; and the interaction they can have with presenters through our “Shoutbox” facility and social media platforms.

What do you value most about this project?

Personally, I have always secretly wanted to be a radio broadcaster with my own station in order to celebrate and share the music that I love. What I did not anticipate when taking on this project was what a naturally warm and interesting community ExileFM would become, through our presenters and listeners alike. There is a real spirit of joy and discovery in what we do.

How do you select the artists broadcast on Exile FM?

Each presenter has free rein in selecting the artists that they play on their respective shows. This is part of what makes ExileFM so exciting. As a station, we also welcome unsolicited material and presenters often listen to each other’s shows for pleasure, education, and inspiration.

Do you have a quick anecdote in connection with your radio station or the setting up of this project?

Without going into detail, the three founders were unceremoniously dismissed from another online radio station because we asserted our principles of equality and anti-discrimination. I think our shared values and loyalty to each other, in addition to our taste in music, set the scene for a project in which all the presenters feel invested and included.

What’s next for Exile FM?

We have more UK-based and international presenters lined up, so we hope to get them set up with their shows this year. We’re also looking at developing some promotional merchandise for the station.

To finish up, do you have any words for anyone wishing to embark on this adventure?

Decide what your priorities are, get organized, communicate clearly, and listen to the music.
