If you’re wondering what radio imaging is and why it plays such a crucial role, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s take a look at the details to understand its importance and how to make the most of it for your radio.

Radio imaging isn’t just a collection of sounds, it’s a radio’s sonic DNA. It forges a unique identity, emotionally connecting listeners through recognizable jingles, dynamic sweepers and time signals that punctuate their listening experience. Don’t know all these terms yet? Don’t worry! We’ll explain it all in this article.

1/ What is radio imaging
2/ Why is Radio Imaging so important?
3/ How to create your Radio Imaging?
4/ What type of content should I make for good Radio Imaging?
5/ Ongoing evolution of your audio identity

What is Radio Imaging

Before dive into the essential steps to creating successful radio imaging, it’s important to understand the various components and their functionnality.

The components of radio imaging

Radio imaging is a term used to group together a multitude of sound effects such as jingles, sweepers, drops, time slots and self-promotion, each with its own specific role. Radio imaging goes far beyond the simple creation of a sound identity. Jingles, those short, memorable audio sequences, often embody the station’s name and slogan, ensuring its recognition. More dynamic sweepers highlight key programming moments, while drops concisely reinforce specific messages. Hourly highlights punctuate the day, marking on-air highlights, while auto-promos inform and encourage listeners to stay tuned.

The functionality of radio imaging

Beyond their individual function, these elements are used to create a radio station’s sound identity. They also help listeners identify the content being broadcast (program, column, etc.). Covers are also used to manage transitions between music and announcements. Without them, radio would be nothing more than a succession of music and commercials.

Why is Radio Imaging so important?

You can easily compare radio imaging to its visual identity. You can’t imagine your radio station without its logo or graphic charter? It’s the same for its stream. Your station’s imaging allows you to create a unique listening experience, make your radio instantly recognizable and differentiate it from competing radios.

Creating an essential sound identity

Radio imaging is the audio equivalent of a brand’s graphic charter, such as its logo. It creates a distinctive identity. Jingles and sweepers act as sound emblems, ensuring immediate recognition and strengthening the emotional bond with listeners. This sonic identity is crucial to standing out in a saturated musical landscape.

Audio coherence and fluidity

Designed as a signature sound, radio imaging ensures essential consistency. From captivating drops to rhythmic time-lapses, each element ensures a fluid transition between broadcast content, keeping your music programming interesting. Radio imaging allows you to create a unique listening experience, making your radio instantly recognizable and differentiating it from competing stations.

How to create your Radio Imaging?

There are 2 possible solutions when it comes to creating your radio imaging packages:

Entrust the creation of your imaging to a professional

The advantage of working with a professional is that they will be able to offer you a coherent and effective identity in line with your expectations. We advise you to take your time and to choose them with the greatest care, because they will be responsible for the success of part of your broadcast. Fortunately, many professionals offer you samples so that you can hear their voice, and see what they are capable of. For a complete, high quality radio imaging package, you can count on average between $300 and $700. Here are two providers used by many radios: Music Radio CreativeReel World.

Manage the creation of your station package yourself

The advantage of creating your own radio imaging is that you are the best person to know what you want for your broadcast. Whatever your knowledge or experience, there are many tutorials to help you create a successful radio package from the comfort of your own home. All you need is a computer, an audio recording software, and a royalty-free sound bank. It’s then up to you to choose the tone of your radio imaging, which should reflect the identity of your radio station. Before you get started, ask yourself questions such as:

  • Who is my target audience?
  • Which tone of voice should I use?
  • What kind of other audio elements do I want to incorporate?

These questions will help you define the goal of your radio imaging and help it come to life.

We have an article on our blog that will give you the keys to successfully create your first jingle.

What type of content should I make for good Imaging?

If you’ve just started your own Internet radio station, you’ll probably want to know the first elements to create or order for your first radio package.  Here’s a list of the first audio files you’ll need:

  • Jingles: 5-15 second sound elements that incorporates the name of your radio, as well as your radio’s slogan or catchphrase.
  • Radio Sweeper: a 5-10 second sound element that is primarily used to underline a music or a launch.
  • Music bed: a musical element of 1-6 minutes (voiceless) that is used to accompany your spoken interventions.
  • Promos: a 30-second sound element that informs your listeners of the next program and encourages them to stay tuned.
  • Intros & Outros: sound elements that can be used to introduce or conclude an advert, a program or a musical track.
  • Listener audio shout-outs: a sound element that authentically demonstrates your listeners’ attachment to your radio.
  • Hourly announcements: a sound element of 8 to 20 seconds that announces the time (generally on the hour.) It helps maintain the rhythm of your broadcast over 12 or 24 hours.

Each of these elements is a crucial pillar of your audio communication, helping to forge a distinctive identity for your radio. These sounds are not simply audio elements, but the very foundations of your sound image, anchoring your station in the auditory memory of your target audience.

Ongoing evolution of your audio identity

Now that you’ve grasped the essence of imaging and its usefulness, it’s crucial to understand that this sound identity must be renewed to maintain the interest of your listeners. Thinking about the evolution of your audio communication is essential to avoid any form of audience fatigue.

Thanks to RadioKing’s Radio Manager, importing and planning the evolution of your sound design becomes a quick and easy process! Test Radio Manager free of charge and without obligation for 14 days to discover its features. Keep your constantly evolving audio identity fresh and appealing, in just a few minutes.

Are you interested in starting or broadcasting your own Internet Radio Station but want to know more about bandwidth? You’ve come to the right place! In this article, we’ll explain what radio streaming bandwidth is and how to choose the best hosting solution for your station.

What is bandwidth?

Bandwidth is a collection of data transmitted between a radio station and its listeners.  This bandwidth is provided by a host and its cost depends on the quantity and quality of the data sent. The higher the number of listeners, the higher the cost.

How do listeners consume bandwidth?

As soon as a listener tunes in to a radio stream, it will start to consume its bandwidth. Whether it is from a mobile application, a website, a listening directory or a connected speaker, the bandwidth consumption will be pretty much the same. However, it may vary depending on the options available. For example, on some radio players, it’s possible to choose the listening quality.

How to estimate the cost of bandwidth?

Most hosting providers base themselves on the number of listeners, the listening time and the quality of the data sent. Therefore, the cost will not be the same if your listeners decide to listen to your radio in high definition (192 or 320 Kbps) or in low definition (128 Kbps). For example, if 1 listener listens to your radio in 128 Kbps for 1h30, they will use 84.37 MB of your bandwidth. If 30 listeners listen to your radio in 128 Kbps for the same length of time, they will consume 2,531.10 MB.

To estimate your needs, you can use our bandwidth calculator below :

Which host to choose for its bandwidth?

Unlike other hosting providers, RadioKing has chosen to simplify things. Instead of taking into account the bandwidth or simultaneous listeners to bill you, we base our pricing on the number of listening hours.

You’re probably wondering what the difference is? The difference is that we don’t penalize you based on the listening quality selected by your listeners. Whether your radio is listened to in 320 Kbps, 192 Kbps or 128 Kbps the cost will be the same.

Now for the icing on the cake…the number of simultaneous listeners is unlimited, and that’s great news for your budget! Click here to discover our offers – no commitment.

How to protect the bandwidth of your radio?

The Radio Manager was developed by RadioKing to help professionals and enthusiasts create and manage your own online radio station. Above all, it offers essential features such as the possibility to automatically disconnect listeners after a set time. We know that, on average, people listen to the radio between 1H30 and 2H30 per day. You can easily choose to kick your listeners off your radio stream after a given amount of time. This allows you to prevent them from leaving your radio stream running (and therefore, consume listening hours) without actually listening to it.

To activate this option, head over to Settings > Security and set a limit.

You can also activate the geo-protection feature under Settings > Security in your Radio Manager to prevent certain countries from accessing your stream if you consider the listening rate suspicious. This function is useful if you encounter abnormally high consumption in specific countries.

We hope that you now have a better understanding of bandwidth thanks to this article! If you have any other questions, or if you want to start your own Internet radio station, our team is here to help!

Have you ever dreamt of creating your own online radio station?

Perhaps the scale and difficulty of the task terrifies you. Well it’s time to stop twiddling your thumbs because we’re here to help! Our team has put together 5 essential must-knows before creating your radio station to help get your adventure off to the right start!

Choose your radio station’s identity

This is probably the most important step. Really take the time to the define your radio station’s identity and ask yourself the right questions. Think about why you want to create your radio station in the first place? What exactly do you want to share with your listeners? Who is your audience going to be?

Before throwing yourself into the deep end, think about the relevance of the type of station you want to create, ask your friends and colleagues for their opinions. This is your chance to stand out and be different so don’t fall into the trap of creating a mainstream radio station. Bearing in mind that there are already thousands of other online radio stations out there, you’re also going to want an original station name. And let’s not forget the catchy slogan.

Lastly, you might want to consider your logo and branding. If you’re no graphic designer, the Internet is overflowing with free resources that’ll allow you to put together all the media communication necessary.

Find the right service provider.

There are a number of service providers that currently exist but you’re going to want one that’s reliable and supportive (RadioKing being one of them). Avoid diving in head first with the first service provider that you come across, do your research. Look closely at what other companies in the same sector are proposing. What exactly are the services and features that they’re offering? Make sure they have available technical support and tutorials, not to mention a genuine love for radio!

Pay particular attention to the proposed offers. For example, most offers tend to depend on the number of listening hours. However, you probably wouldn’t want your radio being limited in terms of its simultaneous listeners. Imagine how disappointed your listeners would be if they weren’t able to tune in to one of your gripping programs!

You’ll also want to think about how you actually mange your station. Any decent service provider will offer a free demo, so take the time to make the most of it and explore the user interface! It might help to make a list of features that you enjoy using and that would make life easier for you in the future. Scheduling, tagging, limiting the number of times a track is played etc. Or even the possibility of having multiple streams. For your more demanding listeners, the option of a higher bitrate stream might be of some interest to them.

Make sure you’re covered with the right music license.

If you’re planning on broadcasting commercial music, you’re going to need a music license. However if you’re simply looking at hosting your own talk show or broadcasting royalty free music, you’re pretty free to do as you please!

The majority of online radio stations tend to to cover themselves with a “blanket license” allowing them to broadcast whatever music is represented by the issuing authority on their station. Prices can vary depending on the country but most radio service providers allow you to specify the countries that can connect to your radio stream. For more information, the best option is to get in contact with your relevant radio licensing authority.

Take advantage of all broadcasting tools.

You’re going to want to make sure you that you have an easy and professional way of sharing your radio station with your listeners so broadcasting tools shouldn’t be taken lightly!

Taking advantage of these tools could also mean monetizing your radio station. Why not integrate adverts on the side of your websites or allow adverts to be displayed when your app starts up?

You can also join our affiliate program in order to earn a commission of up to 20% on each subscription purchased via your referral link!

Prepare yourself for going on air.

Providing that you have a computer, microphone and a pair of headphones, you’ve already got all the necessary tools to release your inner DJIf you’re wanting to go a bit more pro, you might want to check out one of our previous articles on how to create your on home radio studio

If you’re still panicking about what software to use, you can rest assured that RadioKing provides all of its station offers with its very own broadcasting software (StudioKing) along with our brilliant technical team to help you along the way.

Get started today!

In the meantime,

Keep calm & good luck!

Having started out with their weekly FM radio program, Party Time Radio Reggae offers its listeners an immersion into Reggae and Dancehall culture!

Can you describe your project and the idea behind “Party Time Radio Reggae” in a couple of words?

radio-reggae

#PartyTimeTeam on the road !

Party Time is essentially a radio show that specializes in Reggae music. The station started out in 1997 thanks to the founding members’ (Matthia and Cheeka) passion for this genre of music. Building on its success, we decided to create this Internet radio station to provide ongoing content for our listeners.

Prior to this, did you have any experience in the radio world?

Of course! Our program started out on a Parisian radio station FPP (Fréquence Paris Plurielle) 20 years ago!  We’re always on air every Sunday from 10pm to midnight.

How did you hear about Radio King?

Our team did a lot research and tested out several online radio streaming platforms. After some unsuccessful attempts, Radio King seemed to best meet our broadcast requirements.

In your opinion, what are the essential features that Radio King offers to a radio station?

Above all, the first advantage of Radio King is its very simple interface. As for essential features, there are many:

  • General management of your station is pretty intuitive
  • Track recognition through online data bases
  • The filling in of a program in the case where a playlist is too short
  • Broadcasting live thanks to their Air King software

What are the different ways to listen to “Party Time Radio Reggae”?

Obviously our online radio station is accessible via Radio King, but mainly through our site www.partytime.fr. We’ve also registered our streams on different internet providers such as Free, Orange, Bouygues…

Can you tell us about your audience profile?

Our listeners range from 15 to 35 years old. They’re very active on social networks (Facebook, Instagram…). The majority are based in France but our listeners also listen to us from the United States, Africa and even Oceania.

What do you value most about this project?

We like the fact that we’re not just a weekly program, but a separate radio station altogether.

How do you select the artists broadcast on “Party Time Radio Reggae”?

Our programmers receive a lot of daily requests. Our main broadcasting priority is given to “quality“. It’s impossible for us to broadcast a singer who sings out of tune. And then of course, it’s also a matter of taste.

In any case, we attach a great deal of importance to our independence in terms of our music choice – it’s what creates the identity of our radio station.………..

What’s next for “Party Time Radio Reggae”?

Party Time Radio Reggae is constantly changing. This year we’re looking to integrate our new live on air shows into our planning.

To finish up, do you have any words for anyone wishing to embark on this adventure?

There are plenty of solutions to broadcast your online radio station, but if you’re not an expert, Radio King will guide you best in this adventure.

Are you familiar with the term crowdfunding? In simple terms, crowdfunding (the financial child of crowdsourcing) involves presenting your project to the online community on a platform dedicated to inviting people to support your project.

piggy-bankThe donators could be your listeners or even complete strangers, who after having read your profile have been completely captivated by the concept of your radio station. There are a number of projects that are based on this idea and succeed in collecting impressive funds.

What platform should you choose?

There are a number of platforms that currently exist to help finance your project. From Kickstarter to Crowdfunder or even Indie Go Go, these platforms invite you to suggest a specific financial sum to kick start your project. However the idea of long term funding doesn’t come with the package.

For this week’s article, we’ve been on the look out for the ideal platform for our Radio King community. We decided on Tipeee, this crowdfunding platform based on the philosophy of “tipping”  allows supporters to make regular donations to content creators, starting from as little a euro. In our eyes, it’s one of the best ways of making your radio station more sustainable.

How does it work?

handshakeOn Tipeee each creator has their own page. On this page, you present your project, your ambitions and the type of content that you propose to offer your listeners. In order to become a Tipeur (sponsor) for a project, your listener simply needs to indicate the sum that they wish to put forward towards your project.

If we’re talking about a radio producer on our platform, you might want to sponsor them for 2€ a month.

Example : If 50 listeners wish to participate in your project with a budget of 2€/month per person, that’s already 92€/month (-8% commission taken by the platform) or around $104/month.

How can I convince my listeners to help me?

With Tipeee and other crowdfunding platforms, you also have the possibility of offering rewards based on the amount donated. In other words, when a “creator” creates their page on the platform, they can also come up with a list of exclusive and original rewards for the Tipeurs (sponsors) who support them.

Down below are a couple of reward examples to help acknowledge and thank your listeners :

  • $2/month : « Your name clearly marked on our radio website in the “sponsors” section »
  • $4/month : « Your name clearly marked on our radio website in the “sponsors” section + A monthly live dedication on air »

Being able to broadcast live telephone conversations can be a real bonus for your radio station. In fact, be it with listeners or with celebrities, the phone call is one of the simplest ways to create original and interesting content.

Why is Skype not the best solution?

Most broadcasters think, wrongly, that Skype is the optimal way to broadcast live telephone calls. In fact, using Skype on the same computer as your broadcasting software is likely to cause an echo, both for you and for your listeners.

skypeThis echo is due to the fact that your computer is receiving several audio inputs at the same time (your voice + Skype), causing a type of mix-up which is often badly dealt with, and which alters the sound quality for your listeners.

To avoid this and broadcast problem-free, on our blog we will today suggest a simple device, which you will be able to create at home.

Studio-Numbers

This device is made up of: one mixing table (no need for a very complex table, a small one which you can buy for around $70 will be more than enough), a computer, a microphone, a cell phone, and, finally, an audio headset.

1. Mixing table (USB) – Behringer Xenyx Q802

2. Computer

3. Microphone – Behringer XM8500 “Ultravoice” + male/female XLR cable – The sssnake SM6BK

4. Double jack cable 6.35 mm – The sssnake YPK 2030

5. Audio headset

A device in 4 steps:

Connecting the computer

The first thing to do is plug the computer into the mixing table. The computer will broadcast the sound it receives from the mixing table to your radio station. If your mixing table is not USB-compatible, you will need to arm yourself with an RCA/mini-jack cable (3.5mm).

If you are using a classic mixing table, plug the mini jack end of the cable into the “microphone” socket of your computer, and the RCA end into an output on your mixing table.

microConnecting the microphone

The microphone which you are about to connect is the one which will allow your audience to hear you speak. It also needs to be plugged into the mixing table, but this time using an XLR cable. The type of microphone is not important, but you should be aware that the quality of the microphone is directly linked to the sound quality.

Connecting the phone

phoneThis device is compatible with all types of telephone, provided they are fitted with a headphone jack (which is the case for all modern cell phones). To connect it to the mixing table, you will need another RCA/mini-jack 3.5mm cable. Plug the mini-jack end of the cable into the phone’s headphone jack, and the RCA end into an input socket on the mixing table. Once it is connected, the sound from the telephone will be transmitted to the mixing table, and then on to the computer to be broadcast.

The speaker on the phone will hear you thanks to the phone microphone, and not through the microphone which was connected previously.

headphonesConnecting the audio headset

Finally, the last step, without which you will not hear the speaker on the phone: connecting the audio headset. The type of headset is not important, and all you need to do is plug it into an output socket on the mixing table. You will thus be able to hear exactly what is being broadcast on your radio station.

Once these four steps have been completed, your device will be complete and ready to use.

rk-Barre

Once you have checked that the device works, you will be ready to load up your broadcasting software and go live on air. You will then be able to make or receive telephone calls, live on air, to your heart’s content.

Can you describe your project and the origins of “RADIO WOOT” in a few words?

woot-logoRADIO WOOT is an Internet radio station from Marseilles that brings underground musical culture (indie) forward. With constant updates by a passionate (and volunteer) team of programmers, it broadcasts the latest indie rock, Lo-fi, brit pop, electro rock/pop tracks. Several radio shows: Crush On new (new tracks from discovered artists), Niusound (slot for new tracks in the evening at 8pm), Who’s the Boss (listeners’ playlist), Sound Of The Eighties (indie from the 80s), Radio Kills (a season-themed or philosophical-themed show that gives radio an (in)cultural aspect) and many more

The radio station, created in 2013 by Manu Rémoleux (Party Pop), who is a Marseilles pop scene activist, has since expanded and celebrated its 3 years anniversary in 2016 with a handover, a new name, Radio Woot, a new team who still volunteers, and a new website.

Radio Woot gathers lots of partnerships with festivals on the French Riviera (Yeah, Rockorama, Fiesta des suds, MIDI festival) or with local media (Lollipop music store), which connect real life to music that you can listen to and buy.

This is in addition to all the Indie concerts and festivals that we attend, as well as our partnerships with renowned labels/collectives (Talitres, SLY, La souterraine).

. Did you have any experience in the world of radio before that?

No, we didn’t have any experience in the radio industry.

. How did you hear about Radio King?

We were looking for an ad-free platform (we were previously using another platform where ads were inevitable), and our dear Marseilles friends from Doum Doum Radio had just found out about Radio King – We have gone along!

. According to you, what are the essential features Radio King offers to a radio station?

All required features to create a radio station in a simple and efficient interface. Also, on Radio King we don’t have to broadcast ads, and this is a real bonus!

. What are the different ways people can listen to “RADIO WOOT”?

phone-radio-wootRADIO WOOT is, of course, available on our Radio Station Website (radiowoot.com), but also on smartphones (iOS, Android, Windows & Blackberry) where you can find our referenced radio station: Simple Radio, Radioline, Radio.fr, Orange Radio & Radio King!

. Can you tell us about your audience profile?

Our listeners come from around the world: Europe, USA, Asia, Africa and even Australia, but most of our listeners are from Marseilles. They hear about us during events and parties that we attend or through platforms where our radio station is referenced.

. What do you like most about this project?

Discovering new tracks, new partners (labels, festivals, bands…). Lots of bands also send us their music.

. How do you select the artists who are broadcast on “RADIO WOOT”?

They have to match our team’s musical guideline. No concessions, we don’t advertise or promote artists. We just have to have a crush. We’ve had such requirements from the very beginning of this project, and this is why we’ve had so many very good labels (SLY or Talitres) or bands coming to us.

. What’s next for “RADIO WOOT”?

Blind test or Djs sets events in Marseilles in September. We also have new partnerships with different local media and festivals. Finally, we would like to be able to broadcast live concerts on our radio station and recruit new programmers.

. To finish up, do you have any words for anyone wishing to embark on this adventure?

Having some professional requirement with the means available to you… you will always be rewarded.
